I prefer ranger. Whirling Defence and Troll Unguet are nice for countering degen skills and multiple people beating on you. Whirling gives you time to escape without pesky extra-damage being done while using vipers or recall.

Necromancer works well too, there are a number of useful utility skills in each of the skill lines. Plague touch is an example of this, requires no investment and is an awesome condition remover.

For damage, Mesmer. I found a build that even took a warrior 1v1 in the 12v12 pvp =)

I had A/Rt but after a good going over, A/Nec is far better...
ritualist is like a partial necro, monk, elementalist, ranger [no kidding...]
At least necro is just pow*

I (used) and saw a lot of A/R over the weekend, mostly for the wondrousness that is apply poison (and the chance to catch a Black Moa, missing mine already).
I think it's a little hard to tell from these two days though, as I suspect skill availability was a huge issue for a lot of people. Not one conjure in starting set for A/E ? Only 2 (nice but boring) Tactics skills for A/W ? I suspect we'll see some more variety when it comes to the real thing.

I liked using A/R, as said before, apply poison is a nice add-on to the harder hitting skills of the dagger mastery(and some critical hit skills). So, even if I wasn't able to kill something like an NPC at a guard post(I usually didn't in one life) then I could see them die from poisoning(cuz they would.
I can see A/E being very usefull though. Not only do Elementalists have the conjure weapon skills, but they also have some very nice defensive earth skills, some including the wards, silver armor, and kinetic armor. All of which would compliment the assassin in close quarters combat(and hey, that's a good thing because assassins are the close quarters type!).
One combo I just can't see working though is a A/Rt, I haven't read all the skills of a ritualist, but most of them seem to cost a lot of energy(relative to the assassins low mana, 10+ on too many skills is too much energy to be spending) But I dunno, it might happen, I didn't read all the of the skills of a ritualist. I'm too lazy and not motivated enough to care that much.

I used Mesmer with the inspiration line to keep my energy from dipping into the zero range. i got into a rythem where when my energy got too low, my Ether signet was back and recharged already. i was effectively knocking off combos perpetualy with Critical eye, critical strike, 11 critical, 12 dagger and 10 inspiration ( had a major dagger rune)

I was considering a a warrior as a second profession for the actual release based simply on a tactics and shadow arts heavy character. It would make one hell of a tank.

I would have liked to use a A/Mo in the preview, but the better monk skills that I wanted just weren't availabe(I know I could purchase them...but...COULD...you should know I am lazy).
Just a few thoughts on A/Mo, using things like Balthazar's Aura or Balthazar's Spirit would help, especially spirit because it would help regenerated energy(even though it takes 1 regen away from energy). Not only that, but there are enchantment based attacks which, with an enchantment that doesn't go away, would be very beneficial in battle.
